Heard a guy at REI say foam pads are better than inflatable ones for cold weather, now I'm torn

I was in REI last weekend picking up some fuel canisters and overheard this older guy telling his friend that closed-cell foam pads are way better because inflatable ones pop or lose insulation when it gets below freezing. He said he slept on a Therm-a-Rest in 20 degree temps and woke up cold because the air inside got cold too. But I've always used an inflatable pad and thought foam was just for people who want to save weight. What do you guys think, is foam actually warmer or is it just personal preference?

The Thanksgiving I found the perfect escape plan

Last year at my sister's house, my brother-in-law started his annual rant about politics and I knew I had to get out fast. I remembered a tip from a friend about offering to wash dishes by hand since nobody ever volunteers for that job. I spent a peaceful 45 minutes scrubbing pans while everyone else argued, has anyone else found a chore that saves them from awkward conversations?

Blew $60 on a Crunchyroll Premium subscription for one month

Honestly, I figured I'd binge all the new seasonal shows but I only watched like three episodes of one anime before I forgot I even had it. They auto-renewed me and now I'm out that cash with nothing to show for it. Anyone else fall for those yearly subscription traps and regret it?

My aunt got me a "survival blanket" for Christmas and I think she's onto something

I found out from a wilderness first aid course that those cheap mylar blankets actually reflect back 90% of your body heat, so maybe it wasn't the worst gift ever. Has anyone else gotten something that seemed stupid at first but actually had a legit use?

I think PVA glue is overhyped for most bookbinding

Everyone swears by PVA for everything, but I tried using just wheat paste on a leather binding last month for a 300 page journal. The result was way more flexible and the spine didn't crack at all after a week of use. Has anyone else found that PVA makes their books too stiff for certain projects?

Tried swapping a Frigidaire ice maker without unplugging it first... dumb move

Was at a job on Tuesday in Arlington, working on a Frigidaire side-by-side. Customer said ice maker was clicking but not dropping ice. I figured I could swap the module real quick without pulling the plug. Touched a wire to the wrong terminal and got a flash and a pop. Ended up frying the control board too. Learned the hard way: always kill the power before touching anything inside these things. Has anyone else made that mistake?

Hit episode 50 of The Office for the third time this month

Got stuck in a rabbit hole last Tuesday. Started season 2 at midnight and didn't stop until 4 AM. Realized I had watched 50 episodes in just 5 days. That's like 20 hours of Michael Scott screaming at people. My wife caught me giggling alone at 2 AM with a bowl of cereal. She just shook her head and went back to bed. Anyone else lose count of how many times they've rewatched a show?

Had a domino joiner explode on me mid-cut yesterday

Was working on a set of walnut cabinets for a kitchen reno in Portland and about 30 minutes into my afternoon my Festool Domino just let out this horrible grinding noise followed by a bang. The cutter head basically seized up and threw the bit right out the front. Luckily I had my safety glasses on and nobody was in the line of fire but man that scared the crap out of me. I had been using that thing for about 2 years with no issues and I keep up on maintenance so I have no idea what caused it. Had to pack up and go home early and now I'm out a day of work waiting to see if I can get it repaired under warranty. Has anyone else had a domino fail on them like that or did I just get a lemon?

Showerthought: the guy at the comic shop who "knows everything" is always wrong about movie adaptations

I was at Third Eye Comics in Annapolis last weekend and this dude spent 10 minutes telling a new fan that the Daredevil movie was "canon" to the comics... I just stood there flipping through a back issue, wondering if he ever actually reads the source material or just the wiki. Has anyone else noticed these guys are always the loudest? Are they just making it up as they go?

Rant: Everyone loves Darn Tough socks but my pair fell apart in 8 months

I know these socks have a cult following and people say they last forever. I bought 3 pairs for about $25 each at an outdoor store in Portland last spring. By December two of them had holes in the heel. I sent them back for the warranty replacement and the new ones are already thinning after 3 months. Am I the only one getting bad batches or is the quality just not what it used to be?
