The $15 binder clip that saved my divorce paperwork sanity

After my wife moved out last April, I was drowning in bank statements, court filings, and mediation notes spread across my whole kitchen table. A buddy from my old job at the warehouse told me to get a pack of 2-inch binder clips from the office supply store, cost me $15 for a pack of 12. Now I clip each category together and stack them in a milk crate, and I actually found the bank statement from July 2023 in under 30 seconds last week. Has anyone else found a cheap household item that made this process less of a mess?

Funny you mention binder clips, I got a different trick that saved my bacon during my divorce. Grab a pack of those cheap plastic page dividers with the tabs you can write on, they cost like $4 at a dollar store. I labeled each tab with "Bank Statements," "Court Papers," "Emails from Lawyer," that kind of stuff, then slid everything into one big three-ring binder. The binder clips work okay for stacking, but dividers let you flip straight to what you need without digging through a crate.

Hold up, you're telling me dividers actually work that well for organizing? I always figured those tabs would just get in the way and make the binder too thick to close. But honestly, the way you broke it down with the labels for each category makes a lot of sense, I can see how that'd save you from the mess of just cramming everything in one pile. I was one of those people who thought a single stack of papers with a clip on top was good enough, but now I'm rethinking my whole system after reading this. Might have to grab a pack of those next time I'm at the store, sounds way easier than what I've been doing.

Oh man, @park.robin that divorce tip is gold, I feel for you on having to deal with all that paperwork on top of everything else. The binder and dividers setup sounds like a lifesaver honestly, especially when you're already stressed and need to find something fast without losing your mind. I can totally see how just having labeled tabs would make a huge difference compared to digging through a stack of papers with a clip on top, which is what I've always done too. Brian_ramirez is right that a single stack feels like enough until you're in the thick of it and everything's a mess. Real talk, that cheap solution probably saved you hours of frustration when you really needed it.
