Scented dish soap at a potluck nearly ruined the whole dinner
Last Saturday at my cousin's potluck in Austin, someone brought Dawn Apple Blossom to wash dishes. Half the people thought the pasta salad smelled like soap. I could taste it in my iced tea from 10 feet away. Never mixing food and floral scents again. Sticking to unscented Seventh Generation for any event with food around. Anyone else had a scent ruin a meal?

Did you catch that article in Consumer Reports last month about how scented dish soaps leave a residue that can mess with your taste buds? It's not just in your head, that soapy flavor actually sticks to plastic and glassware way more than people think. I read somewhere that the fragrance molecules literally bond with porous materials, which explains why your iced tea got contaminated from across the room. That apple blossom stuff is especially bad because floral scents have these volatile compounds that travel through the air. I switched to a free and clear soap for all my parties after a similar incident with a lemon lavender hand soap ruining a batch of brownies at my church potluck.

Ugh don't even get me started. I switched to free and clear soap about a year ago after I accidentally served my sister a glass of water that tasted exactly like a dryer sheet. She took one sip and goes "did you wash this glass with laundry detergent?" I was so embarrassed. The worst part is I didn't even notice until she said something, which means I'd probably been drinking soap flavored water for weeks like a complete idiot. Now I'm paranoid about everything plastic in my kitchen. I'll literally sniff my tupperware before I use it now, which makes me look insane but whatever.

Same here, I picked up that issue too and it made me rethink everything. Terry, you're spot on about those floral scents being the worst, I had a batch of cookies ruined because I used a scented soap to wash the mixing bowl the night before. I've gone with the free and clear stuff for a while now and my morning coffee actually tastes like coffee again, not like a candle shop.
