My art teacher told me to stop using filters and it stung hard

I was showing my digital portraits to my old teacher from community college, and he said my work looked like someone else's because I leaned too hard on texture filters. He pointed out that the filters were doing all the work and my actual brushwork was getting buried. How do you guys balance using tools like filtering versus developing your own style?

Oh man, that's such a tough thing to hear from someone you respect.

Derek's right, I did the same thing and just started raw for a month.

my actual brushwork was getting buried" - yeah that's a rough thing to hear but he's probably right. Filters can be a crutch, I used to lean on them hard too. What helped me was turning off all the effects and just doing a few paintings raw, then slowly adding filters back in a way that didn't cover up what I was doing.
