Vent: fancy restaurant vs. taco truck first date and I paid for it

Honestly, I tried the whole fancy sit-down dinner thing for a first date last weekend and it was a complete disaster. Spent $140 at this place downtown where the portions were tiny and the waitress kept interrupting us. The guy I was with spent the whole time on his phone, and I just sat there chewing overpriced chicken. Compare that to a taco truck date I did three months ago where we split $18 on two burritos and actually talked for two hours. The food was messy, we shared napkins, and he laughed when salsa dripped on his shirt. Why do we think spending more money makes a date better when it just makes the disappointment hurt worse? Has anyone else found that cheap food makes for better dates or am I just unlucky with pricier spots?

My buddy spent $200 on a first date at a steakhouse last month and the girl ghosted him before they even got the check, so that's a solid counterpoint. High-end places put this weird pressure on everyone to act perfect and you lose the real conversation that happens when you're both just being sloppy with street food. I think nicer restaurants are basically setting you up to feel ripped off when the chemistry isn't there, while cheap spots let you actually be yourselves without the financial sting.

True though - even street food lets you bail early without awkwardness.
