My dad always said to leave a small gap under the fence for water, I thought he was nuts
He told me to raise my new backyard fence by an inch when I put it in last spring, said it stops rot from ground contact. I ignored him and set the posts flush, thinking it looked cleaner. After the heavy rains in November, the bottom boards started to swell and warp. I had to replace three sections already, which cost me about $200 in materials. Has anyone else had a fence fail because it was too close to the dirt?

Ugh, my buddy's fence rotted out the same way.

My neighbor's fence rotted out for the same reason, had to replace the whole thing. Guess dads know a thing or two, huh?

You're right about that fence, @xena_brown50. It's funny how often the old-school advice turns out to be the correct fix. We just ignore it until something breaks for good.
