PSA: The guy at the auto parts store in Springfield told me to just buy a new alternator

I was at the parts counter last week trying to get a rebuild kit for a 2015 Civic. The clerk looked at me like I had two heads and said, 'Nobody fixes those anymore, just buy the whole unit, it's $180.' I used to always try to repair parts to save money and reduce waste. But after he showed me the price and the 2-year warranty on the new one versus the maybe-it-works rebuild, I changed my mind. It's not worth the 3 hours of my time for a fix that might fail in 6 months. Has anyone else run into this where the 'right' repair is just to replace the whole thing now?

But what if the new one fails after a year?

Saw a tech review that said a lot of modern appliances are built with cheaper parts now. They might work fine for that first year, but then you start seeing issues right after the warranty ends. My neighbor's dishwasher pump went out at thirteen months. It's frustrating because you pay for new expecting reliability, but sometimes you just get a longer wait for the same problem.

The warranty on the new one is usually only one year.
