My neighbor's kid asked me why I only read superhero stuff

He said his teacher told him comics are about 'any story you can draw'. Made me dig out my old box of indie stuff from college. Anyone else get nudged back to a forgotten corner of the hobby?

Funny how a kid's question can make you rethink things. I was all about capes and tights for years, but that same idea got me into stuff like "Blankets" and "Essex County". Turns out comics really can be about anything, not just people in spandex.

Yeah, the "capes and tights" thing got me too. I spent a small fortune on superhero books before I found a copy of "Jimmy Corrigan" in a used shop. Felt pretty silly for a while, like I'd been eating nothing but candy and finally tried a real meal.

Oh man, that reminds me of when my niece saw my bookshelf. She asked why all the people on the covers looked so angry and muscly. It made me realize I hadn't tried a quiet, slice-of-life comic in years. I picked one up the next week just to mix things up.
