Finally got my friend to read comics, but my first two tries were a total fail

I tried to get my buddy into comics for ages. My first try was handing him a big event book, 'Crisis on Infinite Earths', and he was lost after three pages. Too many characters, too much history. I gave up for a while. Then, about six months ago, I tried again but with a different approach. I lent him the first trade of 'Ultimate Spider-Man' by Brian Bendis. It starts fresh, no prior knowledge needed. He finished it in two days and asked for the next volume. The difference was giving him a clean start instead of throwing him into the deep end of continuity. It made all the difference. Now he's hooked and we can actually talk about it. Anyone else have a go-to book for getting new readers started?

Ultimate Spider-Man worked for me too, like @terry_wood51 said.

Ultimate Spider-Man is a safe pick but it's still a superhero book. I throw people into something completely different like "Saga" or "Y The Last Man" to show the medium's range. That usually gets a better reaction about what comics can actually be.

Totally agree with @terry_wood51. I started my friend on "Paper Girls" for the same reason, and now she's hooked on comics. What did your friends think after reading Saga?
