Found a 1970s cable guidebook that says we used to test lines with a wet finger

I was cleaning out my grandpa's garage in Toledo and found his old cable installer manual from 1978. It literally has a section on checking for signal by licking your finger and touching the center conductor. I guess they didn't have toners back then. Has anyone else seen these old school methods in a manual?

Reminds me how many old jobs involved literal taste tests.

Is it really that different from what we do now? That wet finger test is just basic troubleshooting with what you have on hand. Faithwalker has a point about taste tests, but a lot of old methods were just practical. You still see people checking for a breeze or a spark the same way. Sometimes the simple way is the fastest way to know if something is live or dead, even if it sounds nuts today.

Ever notice how we still trust our gut over a manual?
