Stopped using mortar mix from the big box store and switched to a local yard's blend

I was getting constant cracking on my retaining wall jobs using that national brand stuff. Switched to a local yard's blend three months ago and the difference is night and day - way less shrinkage and it sets up smoother. Anybody else notice this or is it just my area in Ohio?

Tried the Appalachian Trail approach vs. the PCT approach for water filtering. One broke down on me 3 days in.

Used a squeeze bag system on the AT last fall and it worked fine. Tried a gravity setup for a week in the Sierra this summer because everyone online raves about it. Day 3 the dirty bag sprang a leak at the seam. Had to drink straight from a stream near Bishop Pass. Went back to squeeze bags and never looked back. Anyone else have a filter system that just failed at the worst time?

Vent: That week I burned through three different dish soaps and none of them cut the bacon grease.

Last Tuesday I cooked a big breakfast for my daughter's family, and ended up scrubbing the same cast iron pan three times because the first two soaps just left a greasy film. Third one finally worked but by then I was so annoyed I just threw the pan in the dishwasher. Anyone else have a soap that totally fails on heavy grease but works fine for everyday dishes?

The guy at the comic shop who told me reading the last page first was 'inefficient'

Back in 2018 at Golden Age Comics in Portland, this guy saw me flip to the last page of a graphic novel and goes 'you're ruining the narrative tension, that's a dumb way to read.' I spent three years feeling guilty about it until I realized I just like knowing where things are headed, and honestly it makes me enjoy the journey more. Has anyone else had a stranger dictate how you enjoy your hobbies?

My $85 espresso grinder from 2018 finally gave out this morning

I bought a used Baratza Encore off Craigslist for $85 six years ago and it's been grinding my morning beans ever since without a single issue. Today it just stopped turning mid-pull, no warning sounds or anything, just a sad little hum and nothing else. Has anyone here successfully repaired an older grinder on their own or is it time to finally upgrade?

Shoutout to the nutritionist who told me 200 calories of almonds isn't the same as 200 calories of gummy bears

I read a study in a nutrition journal that said your body actually absorbs fewer calories from whole foods than processed ones because of the energy spent digesting them. I was spending all my points on Fiber One bars thinking I was being smart but now I just eat actual fruit instead. Anybody else get tripped up by that calorie math thing?

Vent: I was certain wireless sensors were garbage until a commercial job changed my mind

I've been installing hardwired systems for 12 years and always told customers wireless was just a shortcut for lazy installers. Last month I took a job at a historic church downtown that wouldn't let me run a single wire through their 1880s plaster walls. I had to use Honeywell 5800 series wireless sensors and figured I'd be back there every month fixing false alarms. To my surprise, after 6 weeks not a single trouble signal and the pastor told me he sleeps better. Has anyone else been forced into wireless and actually had it work out better than expected?

Wasted $50 on bulk spices thinking I'd save money in the long run

I got this idea that buying spices in bulk from that discount store on Main Street would be a smart move. So I grabbed big bags of cumin, paprika, and cinnamon for around $50 total. But here's the thing, they sat in my cabinet for 6 months and most of them lost their flavor before I even got through half the bag. The cumin tastes like dirt now and the paprika is just orange dust. I ended up tossing about $30 worth of it because it just wasn't good anymore. Guess smaller jars from the regular store are actually the better deal for someone like me who cooks for one. Anyone else fall for the bulk buying trap?

I finally watched 'The Room' with a group and they missed the point

Everyone just laughed at the bad acting and weird lines, but I think the movie is a real look at how one person sees the world. Tommy Wiseau made something totally honest, even if it's messy. Has anyone else found a movie that's bad on purpose but good in a different way?
