Choosing between a new band saw blade or a fresh boning knife for the holiday rush
Had to pick one big purchase before Thanksgiving. It was a new 3/4 inch band saw blade for breaking down ribs or a set of high-carbon boning knives. Went with the knives. They were about $180 from a supplier in Spokane. The old blade was still okay, but my main boner was struggling. The new knives made a huge difference on 40 turkeys last week. Anyone have a favorite brand for saw blades I should look at next?

Man, who needs a gym membership when you can get a full workout from a bad boning knife? I mean, trying to separate a turkey thigh from its socket with a dull blade is like trying to cut rope with a credit card. You just end up sweating, swearing, and the joint looks like it went through a wood chipper. Drew965 is right, that's a special kind of long day you don't need during the rush. At least with a worn out saw blade you just get slow, weird cuts. A bad knife turns you into a cave person.

Honestly, you made the right call. A dull boning knife is a nightmare on that many birds. Trying to get through tendons with a bad edge is just asking for a long, frustrating day. The blade can wait until it finally snaps or starts smoking. Smart move putting the money where it makes the biggest difference right now.

Last Thanksgiving I tried to use my old knife that was basically a butter knife at that point... spent twenty minutes on one turkey leg before my brother took pity and handed me his. I felt so dumb, like I was trying to carve with a spoon.
