Our credit card processor went down during a big sale in Austin

It happened this past Saturday right at noon, right when our weekend rush started. We use Square and it just stopped taking payments for about 45 minutes. We had to write down orders on paper tickets and run cards later, which was a huge mess. Has anyone else had a payment system fail and what backup plan worked for you?

Square went down at NOON on a Saturday? That's the absolute worst possible timing. I can't imagine trying to write down card numbers while a line is out the door. The stress of running all those payments later must have been insane.

That's brutal timing for a system crash. Writing down card info feels so sketchy and wrong now. Can't believe they don't have a better backup for that.

@parker_park8 we keep a backup card reader from a different company for exactly this reason. It saved us last month when our main system froze. The extra cost is worth avoiding that panic.
