My brother called my grocery budget 'sad lettuce money' and it actually helped

I was showing my brother my budget spreadsheet last month, proud of my $75 a week grocery goal. He looked at it, then at my fridge full of wilted greens and said, 'Dude, that's just sad lettuce money. You're buying stuff because it's cheap, not because you'll eat it.' It hit me hard. I was throwing away $15 worth of produce every week trying to stick to my number. So I changed my plan. Now I budget $90 a week but I plan three specific meals before I shop. I buy the exact veggies for those meals, even if bell peppers cost more than a bag of spinach I'll ignore. I've wasted almost nothing for three weeks! Has anyone else had a friend point out a dumb budget habit that actually saved you cash?

Nice! I started planning meals around what's already in my fridge. Cuts down waste so much.

Patriciap52 has the right idea working with what's already there. My fridge used to be a science experiment with things turning into new life forms. That neighbor from the first post was onto something. We buy all this stuff like we're preparing for a siege, then just stare at it. Now if it's not getting eaten, it's not getting bought.

Ever notice how we get stuck on the wrong number? Like focusing on the price tag instead of what actually gets used. I did the same thing with cheap bulk rice and beans. Had bags of them but never cooked them. My neighbor saw my pantry and just said "that's not food, that's a math problem." Switched to buying less but better stuff I actually want to eat. The real cost is what ends up in the trash.
