Update: I switched from buying all my groceries at Whole Foods to a mix of Aldi and the local farmer's market

I used to drop about $200 a week at Whole Foods thinking I was getting the best quality... now I get the same basics for half that at Aldi and spend the rest on fresh stuff from the Saturday market. The change happened last fall when my rent went up by $150 a month. Anyone else find a better split for their food budget?

That rent hike is a real kick in the pants, isn't it? I did something similar when my car payment went up. I started getting all my dry goods, like pasta and canned beans, from a discount store. Then I use the savings to get meat from a local butcher and eggs from a farm stand. The quality is way better for the important stuff, and I'm not paying for fancy packaging on things that don't need it.

Yeah, that part about using the savings to get better meat and eggs is so smart. I mean, it's like you're not just cutting costs, you're actually moving your money to where it matters more. I had to do that last year when my insurance went up, and it kinda changed how I shop for everything now. It feels less like you're just getting by and more like you're making a real choice about what you value.

Hold on a second, @kim191 I think you're right about the general idea but it's not quite that simple. Getting better eggs and meat from those places can actually cost more some weeks, even with the savings on dry goods. You have to really watch the prices on the farm stand eggs and compare them to the store brand.
