TIL from a cashier why asking for a manager can backfire big time

I was at Target last week and heard a cashier tell a coworker that whenever someone demands a manager over a $3 price check, the manager just marks their account as a known problem. It made me realize how often we jump to get someone in trouble without thinking about the long-term consequences on our shopping experience. Has anyone else heard about stores tracking customer complaints like this?

Do stores really do that kind of tracking on customers? I have friends in retail who told me the "problem customer" notes are mostly for things like return fraud or shoplifting, not for being difficult about a price. Is this cashier's story pretty common or more like an urban legend? I'd be curious to know if other people have had managers actually admit to doing that.

Yeah @the_ruby, that stuff's real. Had a buddy get flagged for asking too many price matches.

I get what you're saying, and I know some stores do keep notes on real problems like fraud. But I had a friend who worked at Home Depot and he said they 100% tag customers who yell over small stuff. It's not some secret system, it's just a note on the account that says "frequent complaint" or "argues about prices." The manager doesn't need to admit it, they just do it to warn other staff. So that cashier's story sounds pretty real to me, not like an urban legend.
