Hot take: I dropped $300 on a 'competition grade' rub that was just salty sugar.
Bought it online after seeing a big name pitmaster talk it up, but my first brisket tasted like a candy bar. That was a whole paycheck down the drain for a fancy jar. What's the biggest waste you've ever bought for your smoker?

Feel your pain, I once bought a "magic" wood chip blend that just made everything taste like a campfire.

Oh man, that "magic" blend sounds like it was just 100% mesquite... the kind that turns a nice steak into a charcoal briquette in five minutes flat. Been there, ended up with chicken that tasted like it was rescued from a forest fire. Some of those bags are basically just fancy kindling.

Remember my first time with mesquite, I was so proud of my "smoke ring" until I realized I'd just cremated a pork shoulder. The dog wouldn't even eat it. I guess some lessons you have to learn the hard, charred way.
