Buffing deep scratches instead of filling them wasted my time.

Polishing won't fix what needs body work.

Buffing deep scratches is just polishing over the problem. You have to fill them first.

That whole "polishing over the problem" line feels a bit dramatic for a scratch. If it's just a daily driver, not a show car, who really cares if the fix isn't perfect? A good buff can make it look way better from a few feet away, which is good enough for most people. Spending all that time and money to fill every single deep scratch seems over the top unless you're trying to win a trophy. Sometimes a decent polish is all you actually need.

Kim373 has a point about deep ones, but yeah, for a daily driver a good polish is just practical. It's like touching up paint on a house, sometimes close enough is fine.
