That job in Austin last spring made me rethink my whole approach to pruning live oaks

Saw a guy top a 60-year-old live oak near Zilker Park and the owner actually thanked him for it. Has anyone else had to bite their tongue when a customer thinks topping is the right call?

Heard my neighbor's cousin tell about a job in Round Rock where a guy insisted on topping his pecan tree because he was tired of sweeping up leaves. The poor tree put out those weak, skinny shoots all summer, then split right down the middle during a spring thunderstorm. Took out the guy's fence and part of his shed. He kept complaining about the cleanup cost, never once connected it to the topping.

That pecan tree was probably begging for mercy before it gave up entirely. At least the guy got a free lesson in cause and effect, even if his wallet had to pay the tuition.

Did I just get flashbacks to the time I tried topping MY own haircut?
