Hot take: that $200 fiddle leaf fig was a total waste of my money

I bought a huge fiddle leaf fig from a fancy nursery downtown last spring thinking it would transform my living room, and it dropped every single leaf within 6 weeks no matter what I did. Between the fussy watering schedule and the draft from my window, that plant cost me way more stress than it was worth. Has anyone else had better luck with cheaper, tougher plants like snake or ZZ?

Stopped at a farmer's market in Lancaster and noticed something about the eggs

I was grabbing a dozen eggs from a guy who had a little stand near the edge of the market. He had a handwritten sign saying $3.50 a dozen for free range, compared to the $6 at the grocery store. Made me wonder if I've been overpaying for stuff just because it's in a nicer package with a brand name... anyone else find better deals just by looking around at smaller vendors?

Overheard a new tech say modern fridges are 'self-diagnosing' and laughed out loud

Was at a supply house on Tuesday near Houston and this kid fresh out of trade school said he barely needs a multimeter because newer fridges tell you what's wrong. I've been doing this 22 years and let me tell you, I replaced a main board on a Samsung last week that said it had a 'compressor fault' but it was actually a bad wire harness behind the evap fan. Has anyone else had a control board lie to them like that?

Shoutout to the old timer in Phoenix who fixed my leaky toilet in 10 minutes

Honestly, I was about to call a plumber and drop $200 on a new wax ring for a toilet that kept wobbling. This guy Bob, retired contractor I met at the hardware store, said just loosen the bolts, push a couple plastic shims under the base, and tighten it back up. Saved me the headache and the money, and it's been solid for 3 months now. Has anyone else had a quick fix from a stranger that actually worked?

I still think plywood subfloors are better than OSB for most jobs

I was helping a buddy redo his basement last month down in Springfield, and he insisted on OSB because it's cheaper. We laid 50 sheets of 3/4 inch OSB, and by the third day three sheets had swollen at the edges from just normal humidity. I've used standard plywood on six different job sites over the past two years and never had that issue. Why do so many builders here push OSB when it's clearly less forgiving?

My QME exam took 4 months to schedule, then the report missed everything I said

I filed my claim back in March and the QME appointment finally happened last Tuesday, but when I got the report yesterday it basically said I had no work restrictions even though I told them my back locks up after 20 minutes of standing. The doctor barely looked at my MRI results and spent more time typing than talking to me. Has anyone else had a QME report that totally ignored what you actually said in the exam?

Found out the average person spends 92 hours a year looking for lost items and I got that number from a productivity blog I normally ignore.

That statistic hit me because I realized I waste about 30 minutes every week hunting for my keys or wallet, so has anyone else tried that whole "designated drop zone" thing and actually stuck with it?

Blasted a song so loud my alternator belt snapped on the highway

I was driving down I-95 near Richmond last month with "Enter Sandman" maxed out and suddenly my dashboard lights flickered and died. Had to coast to a rest stop and call a tow truck because the belt wrapped around the pulley and shredded everything.

That one Wednesday last month where nothing went right on the bench

I had three repairs lined up for Wednesday morning. First bike had a seized seatpost that I fought for an hour with penetrating oil and a pipe wrench before it broke loose. Then a customer dropped off a carbon frame with a cracked chainstay that I had to turn away because I don't do carbon repairs. The real kicker was a commuter bike where the bottom bracket threads were stripped on both sides. I spent 45 minutes just chasing the threads with a tap and still couldn't save it. To top it off, my truing stand fell off the bench and bent the indicator arm. Has anyone else had a day where it feels like the shop is working against you?

Hot take: The hype around Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns is way overblown

I was at my local shop, Cosmic Comics in Austin, last Saturday for their weekly pull list pickup, and someone tried to tell me The Dark Knight Returns is the greatest comic ever. Three years ago, I finally read it cover to cover, and I just don't see it. The art is gritty but messy in a way that feels dated, not timeless. The story has some cool moments, but the whole "Batman beats Superman" thing feels forced and preachy. Plus, the way Miller writes women is honestly kind of cringey now. I get that it changed comics, but so did a lot of other books that hold up better. Am I the only one who thinks this book gets a free pass just because of its reputation?

That documentary about JFK's autopsy photos really got me thinking...

That line about Dr. Wecht just looking at photos later is something I always come back to. You know @jennysullivan, I actually spent a whole weekend once reading through those Warren Commission volumes online. It was a rainy Saturday and I couldn't sleep so I just dove in. What really got me was how much contradictory stuff is in there if you look close enough. I mean the official guys said one thing about the throat wound and then you got private experts like Wecht saying something totally different just from the pictures. It makes you wonder if anyone really knows what happened for sure.

Is a public apology ever enough or do people just want you gone for good? I saw this play out at a church potluck last Sunday

Three times now I've seen this exact thing play out at different gatherings, once at a neighborhood cookout and twice at family reunions. The thing about public apologies is they usually feel forced, like the person is just trying to calm things down so everyone can move on without actually dealing with what happened. People don't want you gone because you messed up, they want you gone because you didn't really mean the apology and everyone knows it.
