Spent $800 on a fancy lawn irrigation system and regret every penny

My neighbor convinced me to install a Rain Bird setup with smart controllers, but after two summers I've spent more on repairs and winterizing than I'd ever save on water bills. Anyone else find these systems more trouble than they're worth in Toronto's climate?

Oh gosh, my friend Karen got one of those fancy systems put in last year and she's already had to call a plumber twice because the pipes froze. She said she spends more time fiddling with the app than she ever did just hauling a hose around the yard.

Got a basic timer from Home Depot, never had a single issue with it.

The basic timer approach is exactly what I'd stick with too, less stuff to go wrong. @the_margaret's friend Karen is a perfect example of why I don't trust those app-controlled systems, they just add more headache. The whole point of a timer is to set it and forget it, not to make your life more complicated with freezing pipes and phone notifications.
