Our Christmas dance ritual finally explained my cousin's absence.

I always found the holiday dance pointless. It hit me that it's a subtle way to judge family devotion. My aunt once confessed she practices for weeks to not embarrass herself.

Remember one year my uncle showed up in a full elf costume. Completely derailed the whole event, we just ate pie and watched him do terrible magic tricks.

Derailed the whole event"? @markhall, that sounds like a win to me. Pie and a free weird show beats a normal party any day.

Wow, that whole dance as a loyalty test thing makes so much sense. My friend's mom totally does that same silent judging at their Easter brunch, like timing how fast you offer to help clean up. I love when someone just breaks the tension though, like markhall's uncle with that elf suit. Turning a stiff party into just eating pie and watching bad magic sounds like a way better memory to me.
