Showerthought: Setting posts in concrete versus gravel pack for a vinyl fence
I keep seeing crews in my area just backfilling with gravel for vinyl posts, but my old boss insisted on a full concrete collar every time. He said a 6-inch pour around the base prevents frost heave better, but gravel is way faster. Which method actually holds up better over a few winters?

Yeah, I learned the hard way about frost heave. My first fence looked like a roller coaster after one winter. Ivanhart is spot on, the concrete is a pain but it doesn't move.

Honestly, your old boss was right. Seen too many frost-heaved posts around here that were just gravel packed. Concrete collar is slower but it actually stays put.
