I finally gave up on that cheap post hole digger from Harbor Freight
Bought it for a job in Tempe last spring, thought I'd save a hundred bucks. The handle snapped clean off after maybe fifteen holes. Had to rent a proper one for two days, cost me $85 plus the lost time. Anyone got a brand that can actually handle rocky soil without breaking?

Feel your pain on that one, been burned by their tools before. Rocky soil is a killer for anything not built tough. In my experience, you're better off spending more upfront for something like an Ames or a professional grade digger. That rental cost plus your time basically paid for half of a good one already.

Fifteen holes is actually pretty good for those cheap ones honestly, they usually break faster than that in my experience. I went through two myself before I finally learned my lesson and got a Seymour. It cost more but that thing has taken rocks, roots, and even some old concrete pieces without flinching. The trick is finding something with a welded blade instead of that stamped metal junk they use on the cheap models. Your time and frustration are worth paying a little extra to avoid, trust me on that.
