Had a horse spook mid-shoe and nearly took a hoof to the shin
Was working a draft cross in a muddy paddock outside Lexington last Tuesday and he stepped sideways, yanked the nail puller out of my hand, and I had to grab his leg and hold it while I finished with the clinch cutter one-handed just to get the shoe off safely has anyone else had a close call that made you rethink setting up in a wet field?

My buddy Dave had a similar thing happen with a Percheron in a wet lot down near Versailles. He was pulling the front shoe and the horse just exploded sideways, knocked the farrier stand clean over and sent tools flying everywhere. Dave said he ended up with a bent farrier rasp stuck in the mud and a hoof shaped bruise on his thigh that took two weeks to fade. After that he started doing all his outside work on a rubber mat or a piece of plywood at the very least, just to keep stable footing for himself and the horse. He still talks about that day like it was a near-death experience, which it kind of was in a farrier sense.

Isn't that just bad luck @simonl11, or is any wet surface asking for trouble?
