Unpopular opinion: the whole "split the bill evenly" thing is a scam for people who order cheap

I was at a dinner last month at a place in Austin with 8 guys. My meal was $18. The guy next to me ordered two appetizers, a steak, and three drinks. His tab came to $87. When the check came, someone said let's just split it 8 ways. I did the math in my head and that was $32 each. So I basically paid $14 for his ribeye. I said no, let's itemize it. Everyone got awkward fast. Has anyone else dealt with that social pressure to just go along with splitting badly?

Isn't part of going out with a group being a good sport and not making everyone do math at the table? If you don't want to risk paying a bit extra for someone else's meal, maybe stick to solo dining or bring a calculator.

Just ask the server for separate checks before anyone orders. It kills the whole awkward split conversation before it starts and nobody has to awkwardly police the bill at the end.
