PSA: I finally got my dad to talk about his will after a scare at his place in Tampa
He had a bad fall last month and it took that to make us sit down and go over everything, which was super awkward at first. I found a free template online called 'The Conversation Project' starter kit and just started filling it out with him, one question at a time over coffee. It took three tries, but now we have a clear plan for his finances and medical wishes, which is a huge weight off. Has anyone else found a good way to start these talks without waiting for a crisis?

Why wait for a scare though?

Exactly, @piper_reed. It's not like the world is ending.

Actually, that's kind of the whole point of the post. Waiting for a scare is exactly what we all want to avoid. The original poster had to go through a real emergency to start talking, and that's the stressful situation they're hoping others can skip. The idea is to have the talk when things are calm, not after a bad fall when everyone is scared and rushed. It's way harder to think clearly in a crisis.
