Honestly, rewiring a 1920s house in Portland made me stop trusting old junction boxes.
Tbh, I found a cloth wrapped neutral spliced with modern 12/2 inside a metal box that was basically dust, and now I just assume every old splice is a fire waiting to happen.

Got a different take on that... my old house has original boxes that are still solid as a rock. Sometimes the old work is just done better.

Yeah, I've seen that too in my place (the plaster is a nightmare though). They definitely built things to last back then, no question. It's just a different way of doing things now.

Ever wonder if the quality just depended on who did the install? Like @victorb74's solid boxes versus that dusty death trap I found. Makes you want to check every single one now!
