Saw a guy's homemade cooling solution at a recycling center in Austin
I was dropping off some old monitors at the Austin recycling center last weekend and spotted this dude unloading a whole server rack from his truck. He had this janky setup where he used a window AC unit and some dryer ducting to push cold air into the front of his rack. I asked him about it and he said it dropped his temps by 15 degrees compared to just fans. Has anyone else tried rigging up a portable AC to cool their gear?

15 degree drop with a window unit is impressive on paper but moisture buildup is a real concern with those things unless you're careful about sealing it right. Not sure I'd trust my gear to dryer ducting long term.

Gotta disagree... window units actually pull moisture out of the air, not blow it in.

I mean sure, a 15 degree drop sounds cool and all, but are we really acting like rigging a window AC unit to dryer ducting is some kind of genius hack? That thing is going to be a condensation factory, and all that moisture is just gonna get sucked right into the fan blades. Plus that dryer duct is basically a perfect little tunnel for dust bunnies to fly in and coat everything. People get way too excited about knocking a few degrees off when their real problem is probably just bad airflow in the room anyway.
