Last week I had a toilet leak that turned into a nightmare
Found water seeping from the base of a toilet in a rental I manage near Austin. Thought it was just a wax ring, easy $10 fix right? Pulled the toilet and discovered the flange was completely rusted out and the subfloor was soft. Ended up spending $180 and three evenings cutting out rotten wood and replacing the flange. Has anyone else had a simple toilet repair blow up into something way bigger?

My buddy Mike had this exact thing happen last year with his own house in Round Rock. He went to swap a leaky fill valve (super basic job) and the shutoff valve just snapped off in his hand when he turned it. Water started spraying everywhere while he's trying to find the main water shutoff in the dark, cramped crawlspace. By the time he got it stopped, he had to rip out a section of drywall and replace the whole valve assembly. What should have been a 30 minute fix turned into a weekend of plumbing and drywall repair, plus a call to his insurance (not for the claim, just for advice). He still jokes that the word "simple" and "toilet" should never be used together.
