Duct tape on a PVC pipe held for 2 years, now I have to deal with it

I patched a crack in my main drain line with duct tape and a hose clamp back in 2023 after a tree root snagged it. Figured it would fail in a month, but the thing held so well I forgot about it until Tuesday when the tape finally rotted through. Has anyone else had a cheap fix outlast their actual plan to fix it the right way?

Honestly, I gotta disagree with the whole "cheap fix outlasted the plan" thing. That tape and clamp was a ticking time bomb, not a win. You gambled with your main drain line for two years, and if that thing had let go during a holiday when guests were flushing wipes and grease, you would have had raw sewage flooding your basement floor. A proper PVC coupling and primer costs like $8 and takes 20 minutes, no hose clamp needed. Cheap fixes only feel clever until they aren't, and you just got lucky it rotted through when you were home.

The real gamble was hoping that corroded pipe wouldn't just snap clean off one day.
