Hot take: EL wire strips look better than LED panels under a jacket, saw a guy at a 2023 Tokyo con with them and switched that day
His jacket had this soft glow instead of harsh spots, so I grabbed a 5 meter EL wire kit for $12 and now my coat lights up even through fog without blinding anyone, anyone else find a cheaper alternative that actually looks more natural?

EL wire has that whole weak glowstick vibe that fades fast in daylight and the battery packs die after like 2 hours tops. LED panels at least give you consistent brightness that won't look washed out the second you step outside a dim con hallway. The flickering from cheap EL inverters is maddening too, kills any natural look for me lol.

The flickering thing is more about bad inverters than EL wire itself, good quality ones don't have that issue. Battery life also depends on length and brand, some setups run 6-8 hours easy with lithium packs. Daylight performance isn't great for either option really, LED panels get washed out too if they're not high enough lumen.
