Pro tip: You can get a free soil test kit from your local county extension office, and the results will blow your mind.
I just got mine back from the extension office in my county and my pH was a 4.5, which explains why nothing but moss would grow. I always thought my yard was just cursed. Has anyone else been shocked by their soil report?

Wait, is a pH of 4.5 really that big of a deal for a whole yard? That seems crazy low. I feel like you'd have to be dumping straight vinegar on it for years to get there. Are you sure the test was right, or did they mix up your sample with someone else's?

That bit about naturally acidic soil from @eva908 is spot on. My uncle's place upstate is like that. Whole hillside is just blueberries and ferns, nothing else takes. He tried for years to put in a proper lawn. Ended up with a patchy mess of weeds and sour grass. Finally gave up and just mulched the whole thing. Now it's a walking path. Sometimes the land just wants what it wants.
