Mulch always looked untidy to me, but it saved my roses this summer.

I skipped mulching for ages because I thought it was just extra work. After adding a layer, the soil stayed damp and my roses bloomed longer in the heat. What backyard hack surprised you with good results?

About mulch looking untidy, it's a trade-off I'll take. My garden stayed alive during that heat wave. A little mess beats dead plants.
