Can we talk about how much water a new lawn really needs?
I was reading a guide from the University of California's agriculture program and they said a new grass lawn needs about 1 inch of water per week, but only for the first two weeks. After that, you can cut it back to half an inch. I was watering my new patch every single day, so that was a big surprise. Has anyone else had to change their watering routine after getting a fact like this?

My buddy killed his whole new lawn last spring by doing the same thing. He was out there with the hose every morning for a month, convinced it needed a daily soak. The grass turned yellow and got these weird fungus spots. His landscaper finally asked about his routine and just facepalmed, saying the roots never had to dig deep for water so they just rotted. He had to rip it all out and start over.

That "big surprise" feeling you got is so common. I see it all the time with stuff like car maintenance schedules or how much detergent to use. The official manual says one thing, but the habit we fall into is way over the top. We end up watering the lawn daily or filling the detergent cap to the brim because more feels like better care. It takes a real fact to snap you out of that automatic routine.

Totally get what you mean. That automatic habit is so hard to break until you see the proof right in front of you. It's like your brain just assumes more effort equals a better result, even when it's wasteful or causes problems. Why do we all default to thinking extra is better? Seeing the actual damage from overdoing it is the only thing that changes your mind.
