Built a rain garden in my side yard and the soggy spot dried up in 2 months

I had this nasty low spot near my downspout that stayed wet for days after rain. Mosquitoes loved it but I sure didn't. After watching a few videos I dug out a shallow basin about 4 feet by 6 feet and filled it with a mix of compost, sand, and native soil. Planted some swamp milkweed and blue flag iris from the local nursery. The first big storm dumped 2 inches of rain and the water was gone in under 12 hours instead of sitting there for 3 days. Two months later the plants are thriving and the area is completely dry between rains. Has anyone else tried a rain garden for a drainage issue like this?

Well look at that, you fixed a problem by working with water instead of fighting it. That's basically the secret to half the headaches people have around their houses, whether it's drainage or dealing with neighbors or whatever. You just gotta point things where you want them to go instead of trying to block everything.

You said "work with water instead of fighting it," but I gotta push back a little here, @knight.mason. Not every problem can be solved by going with the flow... sometimes you really do have to put up a barrier or redirect things hard. I've seen plenty of folks try to gently guide a wet spot in their yard and end up with a swamp because they didn't want to dig a real trench or install a proper drain. And with neighbors, trying to "point things where you want them to go" can backfire if they don't want to move. Sometimes you just gotta stand your ground and say no. That's not fighting, that's just knowing when to stop being flexible.
