TIL you can pressure can meat without a special jar lifter

I always thought you needed that expensive jar lifter tool to safely pull hot jars out of the canner, but last weekend I just used a pair of clean channel locks wrapped in a rubber band and it worked perfectly. Has anyone else hacked their canning setup with random kitchen tools?

Read somewhere that leather welding gloves work great too.

Man, my buddy Tim tried using regular old pliers once and ended up dropping a jar of venison stew all over the kitchen floor. The rubber band trick sounds way more thought out than his "just grab it" approach. Took him two hours to clean up the mess and he's never canned anything since.
