Spent 14 hours on a lighting setup that looked worse than my first try

Spent three days tweaking rim lights and fill sources for a character piece, only to realize the default global light in my software looked better the whole time. Is the technical approach worth chasing if the quick result already works, or am I just cutting corners?

Three days and you missed the forest for the trees...

It's actually four days, but close enough.

You said "the default global light in my software looked better the whole time." That's the thing, what even counts as "better" here? Because if default gives you the mood you want and it's faster, then technical tweaks are just wasting time. But if "better" just means it's brighter or more even, that's not the same thing as good lighting. What was the actual problem you were trying to solve with all those rim lights?
