Can we talk about exporting at 300 DPI for print?

I just spent 3 days fixing a gallery submission because I trusted the default export at 72 DPI. The piece looked fine on my monitor but the print came back blurry as hell. Turns out the online gallery had a 10MB limit and I was killing the resolution to hit it. I learned to always export at 300 DPI first and then compress separately for web previews. Has anyone else gotten burned by this or do you have a better workflow for keeping quality high?

JPEG at 300 dpi, then PNG for smaller spots. Saves me every time.
