Dropped $150 on a VPN subscription for 3 years right before my data got leaked anyway

Signed up for SecureSurf VPN after seeing their ad promising bulletproof privacy, but my email and password got exposed in a breach 6 months later. Anyone else find out the hard way that these services don't protect you from their own screwups?

Did you check if it was SecureSurf's own database that got hacked or just a separate site using the same password?

Great, now I'm that guy who can't even remember which password he reused, classic me.

Wait, hold on. "SecureSurf's own database"? That's... that's actually scary. I didn't even think about that being a possibility. I just assumed it was some random site I signed up for years ago that got popped. If SecureSurf itself got breached, that's a whole different level of messed up. Like, what am I even paying them for then? Their whole thing is being the safe option, right? So if their database is leaking... man, that makes me feel sick.
