The thrift store salad spinner I fixed with a rubber band
Last Tuesday I found a beat up salad spinner at the Salvation Army on Elm Street for three bucks. The handle wouldn't turn right, just slipped and made this sad clicking noise. I took it home and noticed the little gear inside was worn down, not catching properly. Wrapped a thick rubber band around the gear shaft, two loops, and it gripped tight. Now it spins smooth as anything, no more wet lettuce. Saved myself $25 on a new one and kept plastic out of the landfill. Anyone else ever fixed a kitchen gadget with stuff you already had?

Keep an eye on that rubber band. It might dry rot and snap mid-spin.

Dude yes, I did the exact same thing with my parents old toaster last month. The lever wouldn't stay down, kept popping up halfway through. I found a paperclip in the junk drawer, bent it into a little hook, and used it to hold the latch mechanism in place. Works perfect now, toast comes out golden brown every time. It's crazy how much money you can save just messing around with stuff instead of throwing it away.
