Rant: Told a joke at my own wedding reception and the whole room went quiet

I thought it'd be funny to toast my wife by saying 'well, looks like I'm stuck with you now' with a big grin. My wife laughed but her mom and grandma just stared at me like I kicked a puppy. I spent the next 20 minutes explaining it was a joke to like 15 relatives. Has anyone else had a harmless joke land like a lead balloon at a family thing?

oh man "read the room" is real lol. my little brother tried to break the ice at my grandma's 80th birthday party by saying "well, at least you look good for someone who's 80 and a half" and her church friends just stared daggers at him. we spent the whole night passing him plates of food to avoid the awkward silence. some jokes just have way too much potential for people to take the wrong way.

Once thought family events were safe for joking but after seeing that reaction I totally get why you gotta read the room.
