Switched to greeting customers first after a screaming lady at the DMV taught me a lesson

Back in March at the Detroit DMV, this woman yelled at me for five minutes straight because I didn't smile right away, and now I always say hi before even looking at the computer screen, what's the worst customer reaction you've gotten over something small?

Made a point to just smile first, totally diffuses the weird energy.

Had a cashier once who was clearly having a rough day, just slamming things around. Instead of matching that energy, I gave her a small smile and said "you're doing great, no rush." She kind of paused, blinked a few times, then her whole face softened. Rest of the transaction was totally chill, even got a little "have a good one" at the end. Been doing it since with any tense interaction, and it rarely fails.
