My manager told me to match their energy, so I did, and now I'm in a meeting with HR
A guy named Derek from my old call center job kept telling me that if a customer yells, you just match their energy to show you care, and I believed him for a whole 6 weeks. Last Thursday a woman screamed about a $9 late fee for 20 minutes, so I raised my voice right back at her, and my supervisor pulled the recording by Friday morning. Curious if anyone else got burned by taking advice from the one coworker who was always "keeping it real."
Did Derek also tell you to argue with your GPS when it gives bad directions? Honestly that whole "match their energy" thing only works if the other person is calm and you're trying to wake them up, not when someone is already screaming about nine bucks. I feel bad for you though, six weeks of believing a guy who probably got fired from three other jobs must have felt like a setup. That recording getting pulled by Friday morning means your supervisor was already listening, so Derek's advice cost you way more than that late fee ever did.
