I used to bend over backward for every complaint, now I just say no and let them walk.
Back at my old retail job in Denver, I'd replace or refund anything even if it was clearly used or broken by the customer, just to avoid a scene. After a guy screamed at me for 20 minutes over a $5 item, I flipped and started sticking to the policy no matter what. Has anyone else had a moment where you just stopped caring about keeping everyone happy?

Man I dunno, is this really some big turning point or did you just have a bad day and decide to get petty about it? Telling one guy off for screaming at you over pocket change is fine, but acting like you've unlocked some secret to life sounds like a stretch. You were probably just tired and grumpy that day, not some enlightened retail warrior. People on here act like saying no is this huge profound act when really it's just basic policy you should've been following the whole time.

Bit dramatic for a Tuesday afternoon, no?

Well would you look at that, the customer is not always right after all. Good for you for finally snapping out of that retail trance where you think everyone deserves a medal for buying a $5 item. I bet that guy is still telling his friends about the time he got screamed at over pocket change and the manager didn't even give him a freebie. Sometimes the best customer service is just saying "no" and watching them stomp off like a toddler who dropped their ice cream. Keep up the good work, you're making the world a slightly less whiny place.
