Changed my mind about letting customers walk over me

I used to be the yes-person cashier at a Target in Phoenix, always letting people return stuff without a receipt even if it was clearly used. But last month, some lady tried to return a half-eaten bag of dog food from 2021 and threw a fit when I said no. After my manager backed me up for once, I realized setting boundaries stops the worst of the screaming matches. Anyone else find that being firm actually cuts down on the crazy return attempts?

Thats the thing most people dont get. Being nice all the time actually makes the crazies worse because they know youll cave eventually. Once you flip that switch and start saying no clearly and consistently, they stop trying as much because they know the game is over. The ones who scream the loudest are usually the ones whove gotten away with it before. Your manager backing you up is huge too because it tells the whole store that the rules actually mean something now. Stick with it and watch how many of those people just fade away to go bother some other place.
