When my roommate's critique of my dishwashing actually helped

My old roommate Marcus watched me load the dishwasher for like 4 months and finally said, 'you're putting the cups at the wrong angle, they pool water and smell.' I switched to tilting them face down and the weird mildew smell is gone. Has anyone else had a roommate's nagging turn out to be a legit fix?

and honestly @tarar27, the real lesson here is that some people just need to watch you struggle for a bit before they say anything. Maybe Marcus was trying to figure out if it was a one-off thing or a habit, because once you call someone out on dishwashing, you can't really take it back. I mean, I had a similar thing with my old roommate and the way I stacked bowls. He watched me for like six weeks before he finally said the bowls were trapping grease in the little rim under the edge. I was annoyed at first because I thought he was being picky, but then I ran my finger under the rim and yeah, it was gross. It's weird how we get stuck in these tiny routines and just assume they're fine because nobody's said anything. The whole silent tolerance thing is kind of a gamble, sometimes you get a fix, sometimes you just live with the smell for three months.

Marcus didn't say anything for three months, which is a whole quarter of me smelling sour cups every morning. That's the exact kind of passive aggressive silence that makes you wonder if your dishes are fine or if you're just nose blind. Now I angle everything like it's trying to avoid eye contact with the heating coil and the kitchen smells like a normal place instead of a forgotten gym bag. I owe him a beer but I also kind of want to tell him he could have just said something back in October.
