Showerthought: I saw a news clip about a new 1,000-ton crane being used for a bridge project in Pittsburgh.

It made me realize how much the public only sees the big lifts, not the years of planning and the guys running the rigging that make it possible.

That crane in Pittsburgh is a good example. The real story is the months of soil testing to make sure the ground can even hold it. Then the crews have to close lanes and build a temporary road just to get the crane parts to the site. All that happens before anyone even sees the big lift on the news.

Exactly. The prep work is insane. They probably had to bring in special mats just to spread the crane's weight out. All that for a few minutes of footage.

Yeah, and don't forget the traffic control plan costs more than the crane rental some days.
