Shoutout to my old manager who made us clock in 15 minutes early, unpaid, every single shift
Back in 2011 I worked at a sandwich place off Route 9 and we had to show up 15 minutes before our shift to "get ready," which meant unpaid time we never saw a dime for. Now I work from home and my current boss does not care if I roll out of bed at 8:59, which feels like a completely different world. The math on that old job is wild, 15 minutes a day for two years is around 130 hours I basically gave away for free. Did anyone else deal with this kind of thing at a food service gig, and did you ever push back?
That "get ready" thing was the worst because it was never actually 15 minutes. You had to find your apron, wash your hands, maybe change out of a hoodie, and by the time the clock actually started you were already sweating. My buddy worked at a pizza place that did the same thing and he started writing his real start time on the back of his pay stub just to keep track. After about 6 months he had a whole notebook and when he showed it to the owner the guy just shrugged and said "that's the cost of having a job." The part that gets me is they always framed it like it was for us, like we needed that time to be ready, when really it was so the store could have us on the floor the second the rush hit and not pay for any of it.
