Just read that 40% of data loss happens from hardware failure, not viruses

I was looking at a backup service site and saw that stat. It made me rethink my whole approach to client warnings. Do you guys push hardware checks more than virus scans now?

Tell that to my last external drive that died without a sound. Guess I should've worried about both.

That stat is misleading because hardware fails slowly with warning signs, but a virus can wipe everything in minutes. Most people will notice a hard drive making noise or a computer running hot long before total failure. Focusing too much on hardware checks means missing the real threat that moves fast and leaves no time for backups. Clients need to understand both risks, but the sudden danger of malware should still be the main warning. Letting a virus scan slide for a week is way riskier than skipping a hardware test.

Agree with @samwalker, drives CAN just DIE without a peep.
